something that made me laugh in catching fire is that scene with katniss meeting finnick with the horses: when she tells him that “everybody seems to know my secrets before I know them myself" and finnick replies “unfortunately, I think that’s true.” cause finnick, of course, is already in on the plan to bust katniss out 😭

screenshot of footnote reading "In nearly all texts written in Greek, regardless of date, Procne turns into the nightingale and Philomela turns into the swallow (Aristotle, Rh. 3.3.4; Conon Narr. 31; Zenobius 3.14; Plutarch, Mor. Quaest. Conv. 727c; Pseudo-Apollodorus, Bibl. 3.14.8; Achilles Tatius, Leucippe and Clitophon 5.5; Pausanias 10.4.9; Antoninus Liberalis, Met. 11; Libanius, Progymnasmata 18; Nonnus, Dion. 2.130-139, 12.75-78, 47.30-33; John Malalas, Chronography 7.189; John Tzetzes, Chil. 7.459-479; John Tzetzes on Hesiod, Op. 566; Triclinius on Aristophanes, Av. 212e). In texts written in Latin, the opposite occurs, with Philomela becoming the nightingale and Procne the swallow (Vergil, G. 4.15; Hyginus, Fab. 45; Ovid, Fast. 2.853-856; Ovid, Tr.; 3.12.9; Petronius, Sat. 131; Pseudo-Lactantius Placidus, Narrationes Fabularum Ovidiarum 6.7; Servius on Vergil, Ecl. 6.78; Servius on Vergil, Aen. 1.235). The sole exception to this trend is the second century BCE geographer Agatharchides of Cnidus, who wrote in Greek and refers to Philomela as a nightingale (De Mare Erythraeo 7.34-35). The reasons for this pattern is unclear, but it is more complex than a simple temporal shift from Procne as the nightingale in earlier Greek versions and Philomela as the nightingale in later versions from Roman imperial writers, as is sometimes implied (e.g. Forbes-Irving 1990, 249; March 2003, 141n6; Sommerstein and Fitzpatrick 2006, 142n3; Dova 2020, 70n4)."ALT

evil version of catullus 5. let us die, mea lesbia, and let us hate

mytsitsini asked:

Eos liked Ganymede? Where's that from?

littlesparklight:

mytsitsini:

littlesparklight:

Sure! It’s a rare variant, much like the “make it more realistic” variants where either Minos or Tantalos kidnaps Ganymede (he dies in both of those).

The Eos one only survives as a mention in a scholia on Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica (this one, specifically: Schol. ad Apollon. Rhod. iii. 115). While I can’t find any direct text, any paraphrases of it that I’ve seen all agree that Eos kidnapped both Tithonos and Ganymede (making Ganymede in this case like in some mentions, a son of Laomedon), and that Zeus, in taking Ganymede from Eos, promises her something else. She asks for immortality for Tithonos - and yet, as always, forgets to ask for eternal youth for him.

So, on its face, it’s a slightly elaborated on/longer version of the standard Eos-Tithonos myth, just with a middle step between beginning and end.

Ah ok, I asked you because I had heard of that before, with the same citation, but when I went looking for it, I couldn’t find anything. Scholium 3.114 only mentions Ganymede and Zeus, while scholium 3.158 does mention Eos, but:

158. in these lines he transcribes the words of Ibycus about the abduction of Ganymede which he talk about in the To Gorgias ode, and also brings up Eos, who snatched Tithonus.

Now, I might be misinterpreting the text here but I don’t think it says Eos took Ganymede, he simply compares the two tales. I could be wrong though.

All I can tell you is that since Theoi uses a dictionary entry for that particular but briefly stated info (so, like, it’s not from Graves lol), so if something’s wrong it with the cite (though none of your numbers match up to the scholia number given in the cite?) it’d have been wrong back there. And only for that one cite since the rest seem ok to me - unless in digitalising that entry some numbers got wrong?

Ah, William Smith’s DofGaRBaM. Yeah mostly reliable but I’ve seen a couple of wrong citations in his entries.

Maybe it’s from some other text but so far I haven’t found anything.

with everyone rightfully panning that new “adult” scooby-doo show, i thought about the gang actually being adults today. since the original show debuted in 1969, and with them being teens back then, in 2023 they’d be in their early 70s. so have some retiree scooby gang!

  • fred i just figured he’d be a kind unassuming older gentlemen who still has a penchant for tiny pranks. the kinda grandpa figure who always has a few pieces of candy in his pocket just in case it looks like someone needs one.
  • shaggy would absolutely be like willie nelson, full stop. chill old dude, knows the lyrics to everything 70s, and often volunteers at animal shelters mostly as a dog walker/socializer.
  • daphne i imagine would be a graceful ager but embraces her silvery hair like helen mirren or jamie lee curtis, and supports young up and coming fashion designers/models through a foundation she set up.
  • velma put out a few mystery novels in her 40s that took off and now, similar to daphne, mentors other authors through creative writing seminars. she has trifocals now.

the unfortunate reality is that dogs don’t live near as long as people, even ones with a tenuous grasp of the human language. but, over the years, each of them has adopted different dogs and given them as much love as they did their beloved great dane detective.
